The best UK cities for a stag do, and who each one suits

Newcastle, Liverpool, Cardiff, Edinburgh and more: how the night works in each city, what it's best for and what a weekend costs from.

Revel Stag · Updated 20 October 2026 · 5 min read

A UK stag skips the airport, the passports and the exchange rate, and it's easier for mates of different ages and budgets to say yes. The trick is picking the city that fits your group rather than the one everyone has heard of.

Here's how the night actually works in each of our UK cities, who it suits, and what our trips start from. Prices are per person and were checked in October 2026; each trip page has the live price.

Newcastle: the classic big night

Newcastle's centre is compact and steep. The Diamond Strip on Collingwood Street is a minute from Central Station, the Bigg Market is a few minutes uphill, and the Quayside sits below them under the Tyne Bridge. Almost everything is walkable, as long as nobody minds the climb home.

Best for: a group that wants a loud, proper night out with very little travel between bars. Dress smart for the Diamond Strip; the Bigg Market is where costumes are welcome.

From: Newcastle Overnight £105 pp (one night), Newcastle Classic £270 pp (two nights). See Newcastle.

Liverpool: music, football and late finishes

A Liverpool night follows a well-worn path: early pints around the Cavern Quarter, dinner on Bold Street or at the Albert Dock, then the Ropewalks and Concert Square until the clubs shut at 3am or 4am. The Baltic Triangle, just south, does crazy golf, street food and warehouse clubs.

Best for: football fans, music fans and groups who like a late one. Doors on Concert Square are strict about big groups of men, so arrive in fours and fives.

From: Liverpool Overnight £80 pp (one night), Liverpool Big Weekend £440 pp (two nights). See Liverpool.

Cardiff: small, flat and lively

Cardiff's centre is small and flat, and nearly everything is within a ten-minute walk. St Mary Street is the spine, the stadium is on its western edge, and Chippy Lane is at the bottom for the 2am chips. White-water rafting is ten minutes from the bars, which is rare for a city break.

Best for: rugby fans (match days take over the whole centre) and groups who want an outdoor morning and a big night without travelling between them.

From: Cardiff Overnight £95 pp (one night), The Cardiff Takeover £229 pp (two nights). See Cardiff.

Edinburgh: a night out on two levels

Edinburgh's Old Town is built in layers. The Royal Mile runs along the ridge, and below it, down steep closes, are the Grassmarket for early drinks under the castle and the Cowgate, where most of the city's late licences sit within a few hundred yards. The New Town is smarter, with George Street cocktails and Rose Street pubs.

Best for: groups who want a city with character, whisky and a bit of history between pints. Clubs shut at 3am, so pace it. Some venues don't take stag groups at all; our city page says which ones do.

From: Edinburgh Overnight £105 pp (one night), Edinburgh Highland & Hangovers £239 pp (two nights). See Edinburgh.

Birmingham: three nights out in one city

Birmingham isn't one nightlife street. Broad Street is the big, loud, late strip; the Arcadian and Hurst Street are south of New Street station; Digbeth is warehouse clubs, arcade bars and street food. Most groups pick one or two areas rather than trying to do them all.

Best for: groups spread across the country. New Street is one of the best-connected stations in the country, and prices are kind.

From: Birmingham Overnight £90 pp (one night), Birmingham Classic £230 pp (two nights). See Birmingham.

London: pick a base and stay in it

London has no single nightlife street. It has a dozen neighbourhoods that are each a full night out, and they're 30 to 45 minutes apart on the Tube. The groups who have the best time choose one base for the big night (Shoreditch, Soho or Clapham) and save the rest of the city for daylight: a river bus, a match or a long lunch.

Best for: groups who want the biggest choice of activities, and a groom who'd rather see a show or a match than a strip of bars. It's the dearest UK city, so watch the budget.

From: London Overnight £135 pp (one night), London Classic £330 pp (two nights). See London.

Brighton: the seaside with a late licence

Brighton's night runs along the seafront and up into the Lanes behind it. West Street is the big-club street, the beach has bars built into the arches under the promenade, and the station to the sea is a straight walk downhill. Doors can be wary of obvious stag groups, so split up.

Best for: a summer weekend, groups coming from London and the south-east (the fastest train from Victoria takes under an hour), and a groom who'd like a pier, a beach and a late one.

From: Brighton Overnight £95 pp (one night), Brighton Classic £205 pp (two nights). See Brighton.

Bournemouth: beach by day, bars by night

Bournemouth is a beach town with a proper night out on top. Old Christchurch Road is the main drag of bars and late clubs, the Triangle is more alternative, and the pier is a short walk down through the gardens. There's sand, a zip wire off the end of the pier and quad biking inland.

Best for: a summer stag on a budget, and groups who want a day on the beach before the night out. The best months are May to September.

From: Bournemouth Overnight £75 pp (one night), Bournemouth Classic £265 pp (two nights). See Bournemouth.

Before you pick

  • Check the date. Big home matches, festivals and race meetings fill hotels and tighten doors. Each city page lists the dates to know.
  • Bring photo ID. Most UK club doors ask for a passport or driving licence, and some won't accept a photo on a phone.
  • Split up at doors. Fours and sixes get in; twenty matching T-shirts often don't.
