Bournemouth

Why Bournemouth

Bournemouth is the easiest coastal stag in England to organise. The beach, the bars and the hotels sit close together, so a group can walk the whole weekend. It suits groups who want a proper night out without a flight, and it has the space inland for the bigger daytime activities: quads, shooting and driving days are all within reach.

  • No flights, no passports, and you can drive from most of England in a morning.
  • Beach, bars and hotels are close enough to walk between all weekend.
  • The bigger outdoor activities run just inland, so a driving or shooting day is easy to add.
  • Hotels here are used to groups, which makes the rooming straightforward.

What you can do in Bournemouth

Our Bournemouth picks

  • Quad biking & buggies in Bournemouth

    Quad biking & buggies

    2 hours

You are taught the controls on a practice area, then you ride the trail in a line behind a lead instructor, with a sweeper at the back.

    Local tips

Quads and buggies run at countryside sites outside Bournemouth, with one main centre near Bere Regis about 22 miles from the town centre and no transfers included, so book minibuses. In an hour-long quad session each rider gets 20 to 25 minutes on the bikes while the group rotates. Do not arrive having had a drink: you will be turned away without a refund. Limits are 6ft 6in and 20 stone. Buggies do not run from November to March, and some combinations are Saturday-only. Expect to get muddy, and pair it with clays or rifles on site.

  • Axe throwing in Bournemouth

    Axe throwing

    3 hours

A coach teaches the throw, walks you through the safety rules and stays in the lane with you.

    Local tips

Axe throwing near Bournemouth is an outdoor countryside activity rather than a town-centre lane: tomahawks thrown at wooden targets across zones with different scoring and distances, over one to two hours depending on group size. The site has a catering van, with a barbecue in warmer months, and fancy dress is welcome as long as the safety kit fits over it. Add your own prizes and forfeits to carry the competition into the evening.

  • Gun range shooting in Bournemouth

    Gun range shooting

    2 hours

A range officer covers safety and handling, then you shoot a set number of rounds across a few different weapons at paper targets.

    Local tips

Live-fire shooting near Bournemouth uses .22 calibre rifles, including military-style models, on a purpose-built outdoor range in the countryside rather than an indoor lane. Expect around 40 rounds each, one-to-one tuition and a session of one to two hours depending on group size. The site has a catering van, with a barbecue in warmer months, and fancy dress is welcome if the safety kit fits over it. It is often combined with axes, crossbows and buggies over three and a half to four hours. A zombie-themed version adds tomahawks and crossbows over up to four hours. Save the drinking for the evening.

  • Activity bar (games, darts, shuffleboard) in Bournemouth

    Activity bar (games, darts, shuffleboard)

    2 hours

You get a reserved area for a set block of time, with the games on your table or lane and someone on hand to explain the scoring.

    Local tips

Bournemouth's games bars are in the town centre. The main one is in the leisure complex on Exeter Crescent, where a two-hour package lets you pick two of American pool, beer pong, karaoke, electric darts, shuffleboard or axe throwing, with slots between noon and 6pm. Richmond Hill has a darts-and-shuffleboard package of an hour each, running noon to 9pm, 18+ with ID. An apres-ski-style beer bar in town does beer towers at happy hour, which makes a good opening stop for the evening.

  • Club entry, VIP & booths in Bournemouth

    Club entry, VIP & booths

    3 hours

Standard entry gets the group past the queue on a guest list, which matters because large male groups are the first ones a door turns away.

    Local tips

Bournemouth's clubs are a short walk from each other in the town centre. The biggest, on Fir Vale Road, has two rooms, VIP booths and table service; guest-list entry on Fridays and Saturdays requires arrival before 11:30pm. A pop club on Old Christchurch Road offers reserved areas with a bottle of spirits, or prosecco and sharing cocktails, with guest-list entry before 11pm. Reserved tables with drinks packages on Yelverton Road take up to ten or 15 per table. Smart casual is the standard, and ID may be asked for.

  • Bottomless brunch in Bournemouth

    Bottomless brunch

    2 hours

You get a main course from a set menu and unlimited prosecco, beer or cocktails for a timed window, typically ninety minutes to two hours from when you are seated.

    Local tips

Bournemouth's brunches are all central: on Richmond Hill by the Square, in the Exeter Crescent leisure complex and on Exeter Road. Windows are 90 minutes to two hours. The leisure-complex brunch runs on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm and 4pm, on shared tables, and the drag-hosted bingo brunch on Exeter Road runs every Saturday from noon to 4pm, with bottomless drinks between 1pm and 2:30pm. The Richmond Hill venue starts from 10am at weekends. Expect to be asked for photo ID, and book Saturdays well ahead.

Airsoft & laser combat in Bournemouth

Airsoft & laser combat

1.5 hours

You are briefed on safety and the rules, issued kit, then run a series of short game types across the afternoon: team deathmatch, capture the flag, defend the base.

Assault course & army games in Bournemouth

Assault course & army games

1.5 hours

An instructor takes the group through the course, then you run it in teams, timed, with penalties for anyone who cheats the obstacles.

Local tips

The main assault course near Bournemouth is out in the countryside: a course of around 40 obstacles paired with single-seater rage buggies, over one and a half to two hours. It runs year-round but depends on the weather, so wear outdoor clothes you can get muddy. In town, a beachfront gym by the East Cliff zig-zag runs a 75-minute special forces mental-strength session for ten to 40, with kit provided. A high ropes course of about 90 minutes, in harnesses and helmets, is a further option for a group that wants height rather than mud.

Local tips

Axe throwing near Bournemouth is an outdoor countryside activity rather than a town-centre lane: tomahawks thrown at wooden targets across zones with different scoring and distances, over one to two hours depending on group size. Add your own prizes and forfeits to carry the competition into the evening.

Driving experience (tanks, rally, off-road) in Bournemouth

Driving experience (tanks, rally, off-road)

2 hours

You get a briefing, then a set number of laps or a timed slot behind the wheel with an instructor in the passenger seat.

Local tips

Bournemouth's driving options are rural. Blindfold 4x4 driving, where the group shouts directions at a blindfolded driver in a 3.5-tonne 4x4, runs at a countryside activity site with a catering van; allow one to two hours. Further afield, ex-army vehicle drives run near Downton, south of Salisbury, and an ex-army armoured personnel carrier drive runs through forest country in Hampshire; both start at 11am or 2pm and need a full driving licence. Off-road buggies do not run from November to March. Arrive sober, as the buggy site turns away anyone who has been drinking.

Go-karting in Bournemouth

Go-karting

1.5 hours

You get a briefing, race suit, helmet and gloves, then a session that usually runs about an hour: practice laps, a qualifying run and a scored final.

Paintballing in Bournemouth

Paintballing

1 hour

A half-day is usually five or six game zones, played in teams with a marshal calling each game: attack and defend, capture the flag, and a last-man-standing finish.

Clay pigeon shooting in Bournemouth

Clay pigeon shooting

An instructor covers gun safety and the mount, then you shoot in small groups from a stand while the rest of the group watches.

Local tips

Clay shooting runs at a countryside centre near Bere Regis, about 22 miles from the centre of Bournemouth, with no transfers included. Packages give each person around 18 to 20 shots and are pitched at beginners. Bring ID, and do not arrive having had a drink: you will be turned away with no refund. It can also be combined with blindfold 4x4 driving, off-road buggies and giant table football in a single day, which makes the trip out worth it. Arrange a minibus and save the drinking for the evening.

Archery & combat archery in Bournemouth

Archery & combat archery

1.5 hours

Target archery starts with a coaching session on stance and release, then moves into scored rounds and a knockout between the best shots.

Local tips

Combat archery in Bournemouth runs at a leisure centre in Kinson for 60 to 90 minutes, with the venue confirmed about two weeks before; wear warm, layered sports clothes and trainers. Target archery and crossbows run at countryside activity sites, often as part of a four-activity half day with axe throwing, blindfold 4x4 driving and clays, which lasts about four hours and depends on the weather. The countryside sites have a catering van, so there is no need to bring lunch. Book the half day early in the trip.

Where to stay in Bournemouth

We don’t name hotels here: the right stay for eight is rarely the right one for twenty. Each package’s page shows the stay it includes, and we match it to your group and dates.

What works for your group size

  1. Under 10

    Go almost anywhere

Most activities take a group this size as it is, a table for dinner is easy to find, and moving between bars is simple.

  2. 10 to 20

    Book the big moments

Pick activities that run in teams or heats, and book the dinner table and the first bar rather than walking in.

  3. 20+

    Plan it around the group

Choose activities built for big groups, split into teams, and keep everyone under one roof or close together. Book tables and late entry well ahead.

Getting there and when to go

Getting there

Most groups drive. There are direct trains from London Waterloo in around two hours, and services from the Midlands with a change. Bournemouth has its own small airport for groups coming from further afield. Flights are never included in our prices. Airport: Bournemouth Airport (BOH). Station: Bournemouth Station.

When to go

June to September for the beach and the outdoor activities. Spring and autumn still work for an indoor weekend and are noticeably cheaper. Winter is quiet, and some of the seasonal activity operators close.

How long to stay

1 or 2 nights

Bournemouth, the way locals do it

Bournemouth is a beach town with a proper night out on top. The town centre sits in the valley of the little River Bourne, with the Lower Gardens running from the Square down to the pier and seven miles of sand. The nightlife is in three places within about a fifteen-minute walk of each other: Old Christchurch Road, the long main drag of bars and late clubs; the Triangle around Commercial Road on the west side, which is more alternative and LGBTQ+-friendly; and the seafront at Pier Approach. Boscombe, east of the centre, has the O2 Academy, a surf beach and the Cherries' ground. The club scene has shrunk: Cameo, long the biggest club, closed in June 2026, so the late night now leans on LOST, Barbara's and the late bars.

How the night works

  • Old Christchurch Road

The busiest nightlife street, a long road on the north side of the centre packed with bars and late venues: Barbara's Bier Haus (après-ski and steins, on the old Revolution site), Sharkey's sports bar, George Tapps, O'Neill's and Bar Coast, which has taken over the old Popworld site. Most of the late licences are here. The street has changed a lot in 2026: Popworld and the Slug & Lettuce on Dean Park Crescent closed under those names in the spring.

Best for: The main event for most stags.

  • The Triangle (Commercial Road)

The west side of town around Commercial Road. More alternative, with quirky bars, pubs like the Four Horsemen and the Branksome, Smokin' Aces cocktail lounge, LOST nightclub, and the LGBTQ+-popular Flirt Café Bar. Boom Battle Bar is close by in the BH2 leisure complex on Exeter Crescent.

Best for: Groups who'd rather not spend all night on the main strip.

  • The Square and the Lower Gardens

The middle of town, where the Grade II* listed Lower Gardens run down the valley to the pier. The Moon in the Square (a Wetherspoon in a 1930s department store) and Be At One are around the Square. It's the natural meeting point between the three areas.

Best for: First drinks and regrouping.

  • Pier Approach and the seafront

Fewer seafront bars than you might expect. Around the pier there's Aruba on the first floor of the tent-roofed Pier Approach building, Hot Rocks, WestBeach for seafood, and Key West at the end of the pier, with the beach huts running in both directions. RockReef and the PierZip zip wire are on the pier itself. There's a taxi rank at Pier Approach.

Best for: Afternoons, sunsets and dinner. Aruba for a late one by the sea.

  • Boscombe

East of the centre along Christchurch Road. The O2 Academy, a Grade II listed 1895 theatre and once the Opera House club, is here, along with Boscombe's surf beach and pier, and the Vitality Stadium in Kings Park.

Best for: A gig, a football match, or a beach morning.

Late licences

Bournemouth still runs late for a seaside town, though there are fewer clubs than there were. Barbara's Bier Haus is listed to 3am (its own site says every night; Last Night of Freedom says Friday and Saturday only). LOST runs Friday and Saturday nights, with times set by event. O'Neill's, George Tapps, the Branksome and the Four Horsemen go to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and Boom Battle Bar and Sharkey's to 1.30am. Aruba by the pier has DJs on Friday and Saturday nights. Cameo on Firvale Road, the town's biggest club for years, shut on Saturday 27 June 2026, and Popworld, Revolution and Halo have gone too.

Match days

AFC Bournemouth (the Cherries) play at the Vitality Stadium in Kings Park, Boscombe, a ground of about 12,000, one of the smallest in Premier League history. This season they're in the Europa League for the first time. UEFA lists four home league-phase games: Sturm Graz (15 October, played), AC Milan (22 October 2026), Viktoria Plzeň (10 December 2026) and Hapoel Be'er Sheva (28 January 2027). With a ground that small, match days don't take over the town centre, but tickets are very hard to get.

Getting around

Old Christchurch Road to the pier: about 14 minutes (Last Night of Freedom). Old Christchurch Road to the Triangle: about 14 minutes (Last Night of Freedom). Old Christchurch Road is about 0.7 miles from the seafront. The Square to the pier: a short walk down through the Lower Gardens (estimate). Town centre to Boscombe and the Vitality Stadium: take a bus or taxi (estimate; no time found).

Only in Bournemouth

  • Seven miles of sand and a beach hut for the day

Bournemouth has seven miles of sand, and the beach huts are part of the town's identity. Some of the earliest purpose-built huts in the country went up either side of the pier in 1909, and there are now hundreds of council and private huts along the front. The council hires out more than 250 of them, at Alum Chine, Durley Chine, Bournemouth East and West, Boscombe and Fisherman's Walk. A hut gives the group a base on the beach for the day after: kettle on, bags down, sea in front of you.

Local tip: Book through BCP Council's beach hut hire (bookings for 2026/27 are open). The council also runs seasonal electric beach barbecues at Pier Approach, Boscombe East and Fisherman's Walk. Swim only between the red and yellow flags on lifeguarded beaches, and never after a drink.

  • Off the end of the pier on a zip wire

Bournemouth Pier has been there since 1880, and you can leave it by zip wire. The PierZip, billed as the world's first pier-to-shore zip line, runs 250 metres from a tower on the pier down onto the beach, two riders side by side. RockReef, an indoor climbing centre with 28 themed walls, a Leap of Faith and a high-ropes course, is at the end of the pier, and so is Key West, a bar with the best view back to the town.

Local tip: Do it on the first afternoon, sober. RockReef and PierZip open daily in school holidays (2026 dates include 24 October to 1 November and 19 December to 3 January, apart from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) and on set sessions outside them, so book ahead. There's a weight limit on the zip.

  • A tiny ground, now in Europe

The Cherries play in Kings Park, Boscombe, at a ground of about 12,000, one of the smallest the Premier League has ever had. This season they're in the Europa League, the first time the club has played in Europe, and AC Milan come to Dean Court on 22 October 2026. A European night at a ground that size is a rare thing in English football.

Local tip: Tickets are scarce because the ground is small, so don't plan a stag around getting in. The remaining home European nights are Viktoria Plzeň on 10 December 2026 and Hapoel Be'er Sheva on 28 January 2027, both Thursday nights. On those nights the pubs in town show the game.

  • The Bournemouth 7s

Every May since 2008, Bournemouth has hosted the 7s: a weekend sports and music festival with rugby, netball, hockey, dodgeball and volleyball tournaments by day and music at night. If the stag group plays together, or used to, it's the one weekend in the year built for them. The 2027 festival runs 28 to 30 May.

Local tip: Accommodation goes early for 7s weekend. Book well ahead, and expect the town centre to be full of teams on the Friday and Saturday nights.

  • Boscombe's old Opera House

The O2 Academy on Christchurch Road in Boscombe opened as the Grand Pavilion Theatre in 1895. It was later the Boscombe Hippodrome, then a ballroom, then Tiffany's, then the Academy nightclub. As the Opera House, it was home to Slinky, one of the south coast's big dance nights, until 2013. It's a Grade II listed building, holds 1,800, and still puts on gigs and club nights.

Local tip: Check the listings for the weekend: late 2026 has dance nights like WAH X with Hybrid Minds (31 October) and gigs including Dizzee Rascal (10 November). Get a taxi from the town centre.

Where we’d point you

Our picks, not bookings: we only book a venue if it’s in your plan. Places change, and we last checked these in October 2026.

LOST Bournemouth

Nightclub

LOST Bournemouth

14a Commercial Road, the Triangle (BH2 5LP)

With Cameo gone, this is the town's main dedicated nightclub. Temple-themed, on the Triangle side of town, open Friday and Saturday nights, with VIP tables and booths and dancefloor tables by the DJ.

Book tables through Fourvenues; packages vary by night. The dress-code answer on the site wasn't readable, so ring the venue before turning up in costume. Last Night of Freedom says no fancy dress.

Barbara's Bier Haus

Late bar (après-ski bier haus)

Barbara's Bier Haus

163-167 Old Christchurch Road (BH1 1JU)

Après-ski theme, steins and live music in the middle of the main strip, open until 3am, on the site that used to be Revolution. Run by the same group that ran Cameo.

Last Night of Freedom says fancy dress is allowed. Book a table or private hire through the site. Hours conflict: its site says 4pm to 3am daily (noon on Saturday); Last Night of Freedom lists Friday and Saturday nights only.

Sharkey's Sports Bar

Sports bar (match-day pub)

Sharkey's Sports Bar

215a Old Christchurch Road (BH1 1JZ)

Big-screen sport, pool tables and darts on the main strip. Somewhere to watch the football before the night starts.

Fancy dress allowed, but offensive costumes may be refused (Last Night of Freedom). Open to 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Boom Battle Bar Bournemouth

Activity bar

Boom Battle Bar Bournemouth

Units LG2 and LG3, BH2, Exeter Crescent (BH2 5AU), by the Triangle

Axe throwing, karaoke booths, AR darts, beer pong, shuffleboard and pool under one roof, with a bar and street food. Open to 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays, so it works before or instead of a club.

Has its own stag-do page and bundles of game time, drinks and food. 18+ only after 9pm, and axe throwing is 18+ at all times. Challenge 25, so bring ID. Last Night of Freedom says fancy dress is fine if it isn't offensive and doesn't get in the way of the games.

O2 Academy Bournemouth

Live music venue and club nights

O2 Academy Bournemouth

570 Christchurch Road, Boscombe (BH1 4BH)

A Grade II listed 1895 theatre, once the Opera House club, holding 1,800. Gigs and dance nights through late 2026.

Ticketed. Buy for the whole group in advance and take a taxi from the centre.

The Goat & Tricycle

Real-ale pub

The Goat & Tricycle

27-29 West Hill Road (BH2 5PF), up the hill from the Square

A proper real-ale pub with eleven handpumps, mostly Butcombe and Liberation beers plus Stan's cider. It was two pubs knocked into one, and the left-hand half (the old Pembroke Arms) has a Grade II listed tiled frontage. A good first pint before the night goes chain-bar.

Walk-in pub with food daily except Sunday evenings. Over-18s only. No costumes.

Smokin' Aces

Cocktail bar and whiskey lounge

Smokin' Aces

103 Commercial Road, the Triangle (BH2 5RT)

A retro cocktail bar and whiskey lounge on the Triangle, open to 2am at weekends, for one smarter round away from Old Christchurch Road.

Small venue with downstairs seating; book ahead for a group through its booking page and dress smart.

Key West

Bar and restaurant at the end of the pier (daytime)

Key West

End of Bournemouth Pier (BH2 5AA)

A day bar at the very end of the pier, with an outdoor terrace and the view straight back at the town and the cliffs. Pair it with the PierZip and RockReef next door.

Open all year, but hours vary with the weather and footfall, so check on the day. Private hire by enquiry. Live music and tribute nights now and then.

WestBeach

Seafood restaurant (group lunch or early dinner)

WestBeach

Pier Approach (BH2 5AA), metres from the beach

Local seafood from an open kitchen, with folding glass doors onto a decked terrace over the sand by the pier. It has two AA rosettes, and it's the long lunch by the sea.

Hours on the tourism board listing: closed Monday and Tuesday, to 5pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and to 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays. So book an early table rather than a late one, and ring ahead for a big group.

South Beach Restaurant & Bar

Recovery breakfast

South Beach Restaurant & Bar

The NICI hotel, West Hill Road (BH2 5EJ), above the West Cliff

Big breakfasts, then seafood and grills, with a terrace and a pool area. A slower, nicer morning-after than a café fry-up.

Part of The NICI hotel. Book through the hotel; ring ahead for a big group.

The Branksome

Pub with late kitchen (late-night food)

The Branksome

152-154 Commercial Road, the Triangle (BH2 5LU)

A Triangle pub that serves smash burgers, fish and chips and small plates late, and stays open to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. The nearest thing to a sit-down late feed in the centre.

No fancy dress (Last Night of Freedom).

Venue photos from Google Maps.

Local tips

  • Taxi ranks are at Pier Approach, the Triangle and the Lansdowne. Uber works in Bournemouth, and Last Night of Freedom names Richard's Taxis and United Taxis as local firms.
  • Old Christchurch Road, the Triangle and the pier are each about 14 minutes' walk apart, so the whole night is walkable. Boscombe and the stadium are a taxi.
  • The club scene is smaller than older guides suggest. Cameo closed in June 2026, and Popworld, Revolution and Halo have gone. Plan the late part of the night around LOST, Barbara's and the 2am bars.
  • Fancy dress: allowed at Barbara's Bier Haus, Boom Battle Bar (nothing offensive or restrictive) and Sharkey's. Refused at O'Neill's, Cosy Club, George Tapps, the Branksome, the Four Horsemen and LOST (per Last Night of Freedom). Check before you go if costumes are rude.
  • Bring photo ID. Boom Battle Bar runs Challenge 25 and is over-18s only after 9pm. Big groups get in more easily split into fours and sixes.
  • Europa League nights at the Vitality Stadium in 2026-27 are Thursdays (AC Milan 22 October, Viktoria Plzeň 10 December, Hapoel Be'er Sheva 28 January). Expect busy pubs in town even without tickets.
  • Best season is May to September. Avoid the peak school holidays, when the beaches and bars are packed, and book early for the Bournemouth 7s weekend (28 to 30 May 2027).
  • The Bournemouth Air Festival is NOT running in 2026, and nothing is planned for 2027. Don't sell a weekend around it.
  • Late food is thin. Eat before the clubs, or use the late pub kitchens on the Triangle.
  • Swim only between the red and yellow flags on lifeguarded beaches, never alone and never after a drink. If caught in a rip, float rather than fight it.
  • Keep out of the parks and unlit areas at night. Keep valuables out of reach, and put the accommodation address and door codes in the group chat.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is Bournemouth good for a first-time stag organiser?

Yes. The package handles the planning — accommodation, activities and the nights out — so an organiser without stag experience isn't working it out from scratch.

Can we add extra nights in Bournemouth?

Tell us what the group has in mind when you enquire and we'll say what's possible for that city and those dates.

What's not included in the Bournemouth price?

Whatever isn't listed under a trip's "what's included" — flights, extra drinks, transport beyond what's stated and personal spending are on the group.
