Airsoft uses gas or electric replicas firing plastic BBs and the hits sting a little through clothing, so full overalls, gloves and eye protection are issued and compulsory. Laser combat fires an infrared beam, there is no impact at all, and it suits a group with a wide range of appetites for pain.
Wear old clothes and boots or trainers you do not mind ruining. Bring a change of clothes for afterwards.

Local tips
Formats vary in Amsterdam, so check the venue type before booking: an indoor laser arena suits a mixed group and runs in any weather, while airsoft usually means a longer session and more kit. Ask how far the venue is from the centre and whether transport is included, because a short game can become a half-day once travel is counted. Amsterdam is often cold and wet outside the summer months, so an indoor arena is the safer choice from autumn to spring. Book it for the daytime, before the drinking starts, and confirm the kit and clothing advice with the venue.

Airsoft runs at a woodland site at Bassetts Pole, about ten miles from the centre, in four-hour sessions with breaks, a café and around 2,500 pellets each. Groups of 10 to 25 fit one booking. Wear boots and outdoor clothes; fancy dress is allowed. For something lighter, foam-dart combat runs for an hour at a five-a-side centre on Lichfield Road, north-east of the centre, and laser combat is a two-hour session on a large outdoor battlefield. Keep the airsoft day clear of anything else before dinner.

The full-size option is outdoor laser tag on a farm near Winchburgh, west of the city. The site has eight game zones built like a film set, groups of up to 20 play six to eight games across two or three of them, and it is a drive out, so book transport. Outdoor airsoft sessions run two hours, with rifles and 1,000 BB pellets included. Closer in, a 60-minute Nerf combat session at the Sighthill pitches suits groups of 10 to 20 who want it lighter.

Prague's airsoft and laser games are played in purpose-built themed arenas rather than woodland, so the weather does not matter. Laser tag is short and sharp, usually three games of about 12 minutes each, and some sessions include beer, wine or soft drinks throughout, which makes it an easy early-evening option. Airsoft is the longer one, around two hours with replica rifles and pistols and unlimited BBs. The venues are outside the old town, with taxi or public transport transfers built into most bookings. If the group wants a drink while it plays, pick laser tag over airsoft.
