Escape room stag do

You are briefed, shut in and given sixty minutes.

What it's like

You are briefed, shut in and given sixty minutes. The puzzles are physical and logical rather than knowledge-based, and a games master watches on camera and drops hints when you are stuck. Most rooms have a clear story and a timer on the wall.

A whole stag group will not fit in one room, so you are split across two or three and race each other. That usually turns out better than everyone in one space shouting over each other.

Nothing special to wear. Rooms are strict about drinking beforehand, so do it early in the day.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Netherlands

1 hour

Local tips

The Amsterdam escape rooms used for groups are in the city centre, so there is no travel to plan beyond a short walk from most central hotels. Each game is the standard hour, with a choice of themed rooms. The venues are 18-plus, so everyone should have ID to hand. Bookings typically start from about six people per game, which means a larger group is split across rooms and can race each other. It is a sensible wet-afternoon option, and a good opener on arrival day while the rest of the group is still on its way in.

Local tips

Barcelona's group escape rooms are in the central area, so there is no transfer to arrange. Each game is the standard hour, and the venue used for groups can take from about 6 up to 34 people at once across its rooms, which means even a big stag party can play in a single slot and compare times at the end. It is one of the few activities in the city that is unaffected by heat or rain, so it makes a sensible midday option in July and August, when the beach and the streets are at their hottest.

Birmingham

Birmingham

United Kingdom

1 hour

Local tips

The main escape-room cluster is on Constitution Hill, just north of the centre, with rooms built around the city's 1920s gangster history alongside the usual heist and horror themes. Games last 60 minutes, and a big group is split across several rooms running at the same time. Book at least seven days ahead for a weekend slot, and expect no refunds on cancellation. For something outdoors, a ranger-led jungle-style escape course runs about 30 minutes by taxi from the centre, with helmets, gloves and glasses supplied.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth

United Kingdom

1.5 hours

Local tips

Bournemouth's town-centre escape rooms sit in the leisure complex on Exeter Crescent, with 60-minute games and a welcome drink in the party package. Rooms take a handful of players each, so a stag splits into teams playing side by side and compares times afterwards. For a group that wants to stay together, a Traitors-style deception game runs for 90 minutes in a private room at a central bar for ten or more. A countryside zombie survival day, two to four hours depending on group size, is the outdoor alternative.

Brighton

Brighton

United Kingdom

42 minutes

Local tips

Brighton has two main clusters. A coffee house on London Road hides rooms in an old bank vault and an attic, with 40 minutes to escape, up to seven or eight per room, drinks allowed inside and slots until about 9:45pm at weekends. Another operator runs city-themed rooms on Upper North Street and Trafalgar Lane, taking groups of six to 56 at once, with Saturday availability. A stag group is split across rooms running at the same time or one after another, so compare start times when you book.

Cardiff

Cardiff

United Kingdom

1.5 hours

Local tips

The format most groups book in Cardiff is a 90-minute hosted traitor-style deduction game, played in a private room at a city-centre bar or hotel. The host runs the puzzles and the voting, and props are supplied. Groups need ten or more. The exact venue is confirmed once the balance is paid, so keep the time flexible until then. It works well on a wet afternoon before St Mary Street.

Dublin

Dublin

Ireland

1.5 hours

Local tips

Dublin escape rooms hold up to about eight people each, and venues typically have two or three rooms, so a larger stag splits into teams and races side by side for the hour. Running rooms in parallel depends on availability, so book early. For a bigger or more active group, there is a two-hour indoor challenge zone with 29 physical, skill and mental challenges, played in teams of four or five with a games host. Wear activewear for that one, and expect photos and video to be sent on afterwards.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh

United Kingdom

1 hour

Local tips

Edinburgh's escape rooms hold two to six players each, so a larger group splits across rooms for the hour. The venue at Fountainbridge has six themed rooms but runs Sunday to Friday only, with fixed time slots and arrival 10 to 15 minutes before. That matters if the stag is on a Saturday. Another venue sits in the leisure complex at the top of Leith Walk. For a big group that wants to play together, a 90-minute traitors-style game of truth and lies runs in a private room in a city-centre bar.

Lisbon

Lisbon

Portugal

1 hour

Local tips

Lisbon's group escape rooms are in the central old town, so it is a walk rather than a transfer from most central hotels. Each game is an hour, with two to six players per room and several themed rooms running side by side, so a group of up to about 35 can play at the same time and race each other. Start times are on the even hours, such as 2pm, 4pm and 6pm, and you need to arrive 20 minutes before your slot for the briefing. It is a useful shaded option in the summer heat.

Liverpool

Liverpool

United Kingdom

1.5 hours

Local tips

The main escape-room venue is on Sir Thomas Street in the city centre, with a second on the Albert Dock. Games last an hour and rooms hold five or six people, so a stag group is split across several rooms at once, which turns it into a race between your own teams. Weekday slots are the off-peak option. At the dock venue a welcome drink and a celebration drink are included. A 90-minute traitor-style deduction game also runs in a private room at a city-centre bar or hotel.

London

London

United Kingdom

1.5 hours

Local tips

Most London escape rooms hold up to six, and five is the comfortable number, so a stag of 20 plays as four teams in parallel rooms for the hour. Venues that take groups are in Aldgate, on Oxford Street and in central London. For a bigger group that wants to stay together, a 90-minute game of truth and lies in the style of a TV traitors show runs in a private room in a city-centre bar, with the venue confirmed nearer the date. Some packages add a drink on arrival. Book the rooms side by side early.

Newcastle

Newcastle

United Kingdom

1.5 hours

Local tips

Newcastle's group puzzle options are mostly hosted games rather than locked rooms. Taskmaster-style challenges and Traitors-style deception games run for about 90 minutes in a private room at a city-centre bar, with a host keeping score. They need at least ten players, which suits a stag better than splitting across several small rooms. Because they run in bars, drinks are on hand throughout and the walk to the evening is short. The exact venue is confirmed closer to the date, so check the meeting point the week before.

Prague

Prague

Czech Republic

1 hour

Local tips

Prague's group-friendly escape rooms are near the top of Wenceslas Square in the New Town, within walking distance of the centre, so there is no transfer to arrange. Each game is the standard hour with an English-language briefing. The catch for a stag group is capacity: rooms take five people at most, and a venue typically runs two at once, so a group of ten fits one slot and anything bigger needs staggered start times. Casual clothes are fine and it runs all year. It works well on a Friday afternoon while the last of the group are still arriving from the airport.
