What it's like
A food tour walks a set route with stops for tastings, usually four or five places across a couple of hours, with a guide explaining what you are eating and why the city eats it. You will not need dinner afterwards.
A cooking class is the other version: a chef takes the group through a menu in a kitchen, everyone cooks, then you all sit down and eat what you made with a drink.
Send dietary requirements ahead, because both formats are built on a fixed menu. Comfortable shoes for the tour; closed-toe shoes for the kitchen.

Local tips
Barcelona's food tours meet just off Las Ramblas and work through the Old Town, about three hours across several tapas bars with wine, sangria, vermouth and cava along the way. There is a lunchtime start around 1:30pm and an evening one around 8:15pm, and some evening versions finish with club entry. The cooking class begins with a guided walk round a market before a chef teaches paella and sangria, then the group sits down to three courses; it suits 8 to 16 people. Book the lunchtime tour early in the weekend, as it is the quickest way to learn where to eat for the rest of the trip.

Local tips
Lisbon's food walks run about three hours with an English-speaking guide, pairing local food with a drink at each stop: cheese with port, a codfish cake with vinho verde, chorizo with red wine, and a shot of ginjinha liqueur. The evening alternative is a two-and-a-half-hour all-you-can-eat-and-drink tapas dinner for 8 to 25 people. There is also a two-hour Portuguese cooking class where the group cooks a two-course meal with a glass of wine and a port, best for a group of 12 or more. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk, as the old districts are hilly.

Local tips
The group food options in London are a clue-led food trail from Fitzrovia, a pasta class in Canary Wharf and a dim sum masterclass. The trail takes two to three hours, with three Asian dishes along the way, and starts between midday and 5.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday, closing earlier on Sundays and shut on Mondays. The pasta class runs two hours and finishes with a meal of what you made. The dim sum class needs 15 or more. Tell the organisers about dietary needs in advance.
