What it's like
A coach teaches the throw, walks you through the safety rules and stays in the lane with you. Once everyone can stick an axe in the board you move into scored games and a knockout bracket, which is where it gets competitive.
Sessions are short, usually around an hour, and it is indoors so the weather does not matter. Most venues sit inside a bar, so you can carry on in the same place afterwards.
Closed-toe shoes are compulsory and most venues refuse anyone who has been drinking beforehand. Do it before the drinking, not after.

Local tips
Axe throwing near Bournemouth is an outdoor countryside activity rather than a town-centre lane: tomahawks thrown at wooden targets across zones with different scoring and distances, over one to two hours depending on group size. The site has a catering van, with a barbecue in warmer months, and fancy dress is welcome as long as the safety kit fits over it. Add your own prizes and forfeits to carry the competition into the evening.

Local tips
Axe throwing near Brighton is mostly outdoors, at a shooting ground set in about ten acres of woodland at Falmer, just outside the city, where you learn to sink hatchets into wooden targets. Sessions run about an hour and take up to twelve at a time, so a bigger stag is split into two sessions. Because it is outdoors, dress for the weather. Keep the drinking for afterwards, and book a morning slot so the afternoon is free back in town.

Local tips
Axe throwing in Edinburgh is in the city centre, including a games bar about seven minutes' walk from Waverley station. Sessions last an hour, with up to six people sharing a lane, so a group of 12 needs two lanes. An instructor runs a range of games, and some venues add knives and tomahawks. Closed, flat shoes are compulsory, long hair must be tied back, and no alcohol is allowed beforehand. That makes it a daytime activity: book it before the bars, not after.
