An instructor takes the group through the course, then you run it in teams, timed, with penalties for anyone who cheats the obstacles. Expect crawling, climbing, nets, tunnels and water. Between runs there are usually team challenges and a scoreboard.
It is the most physically demanding option in the list and it does not pretend otherwise. Anyone with a bad back or a dodgy knee should sit this one out rather than find out halfway round.
Wear old clothes and trainers that are going in the bin. Bring a towel and a full change of clothes.

The main assault course near Bournemouth is out in the countryside: a course of around 40 obstacles paired with single-seater rage buggies, over one and a half to two hours. It runs year-round but depends on the weather, so wear outdoor clothes you can get muddy. In town, a beachfront gym by the East Cliff zig-zag runs a 75-minute special forces mental-strength session for ten to 40, with kit provided. A high ropes course of about 90 minutes, in harnesses and helmets, is a further option for a group that wants height rather than mud.
Local tips
Outdoor assault courses near Cardiff run about two hours, with over 20 obstacles such as tyre runs, monkey bars and walls, raced against the clock. A longer, muddier course covers about a mile and a half over two and a half hours. For something higher, a three-storey mining-themed climbing tower at Hirwaun, about 45 minutes away, has 69 obstacles and takes up to 90 minutes, with a 120kg limit and covered shoulders required. Expect mud, and bring a full change of clothes and a bag for wet kit.
