Archery & combat archery stag do
Target archery starts with a coaching session on stance and release, then moves into scored rounds and a knockout between the best shots.
What it's like
Target archery starts with a coaching session on stance and release, then moves into scored rounds and a knockout between the best shots. It is calmer than it sounds and beginners are usually hitting the target inside ten minutes.
Combat archery is the other version: two teams, foam-tipped arrows, face masks, and a dodgeball-style game where you are out if you are hit. It is faster, noisier and better for a group that will not sit still.
Bows, arrows and all safety kit are provided. Wear close-fitting sleeves, and tie long hair back. Trainers are fine either way.

Local tips
Combat archery in Bournemouth runs at a leisure centre in Kinson for 60 to 90 minutes, with the venue confirmed about two weeks before; wear warm, layered sports clothes and trainers. Target archery and crossbows run at countryside activity sites, often as part of a four-activity half day with axe throwing, blindfold 4x4 driving and clays, which lasts about four hours and depends on the weather. The countryside sites have a catering van, so there is no need to bring lunch. Book the half day early in the trip.

Local tips
Target archery runs at a shooting ground at Falmer, just outside Brighton, set in around ten acres of South Downs woodland. Sessions take a maximum of ten, so a larger stag is split into back-to-back sessions. It is outdoors, so dress for the weather and wear sensible shoes. Combat archery runs separately at a sports centre on Falmer Road for 60 to 90 minutes, with foam-tipped arrows; warm layers and trainers are recommended, and the venue is confirmed about two weeks before. It also pairs with an hour of bubble football as a double session.

Local tips
In Dublin this is combat archery tag: two teams, foam-tipped arrows and inflatable bunkers, played on outdoor all-weather pitches a short drive from the centre, such as those around Templeogue. Groups of up to 18 play for an hour and larger groups for 90 minutes. Wear warm layers you can move in and trainers, as it is outdoors in all weather. At least ten players are needed. The venue is often confirmed about two weeks before, so book the taxis once it is.
