Clay pigeon shooting
From about 13:00 · 1 hour
Arrival day. Check in, then out to the Downs for clay shooting: a safety brief, then shooting from a stand with an instructor alongside, finishing in a scored round. Boots and a waterproof, no alcohol beforehand, and time for the travel out.
More about this
There are two main grounds. One is at Falmer, just outside Brighton, on a ten-acre site with CPSA-qualified instructors, 25 clays each and sessions of 60 to 90 minutes, taking up to 15 at a time. The other is in the South Downs near Findon, about 20 miles away, with packages of 25 or 50 clays; transfers are not included, so arrange a minibus. Both are outdoors, so dress for the weather and wear sensible footwear. Keep the drinking for after the session, when everyone is back in town.
An instructor covers gun safety and the mount, then you shoot in small groups from a stand while the rest of the group watches. Most sessions give everyone a set number of cartridges and finish with a flush or a scored round to find a winner.
Guns, cartridges, ear defenders and eye protection are provided. The instructor stays at your shoulder throughout and it is genuinely achievable for someone who has never held a shotgun.
Countryside sites mean boots and a waterproof. No alcohol before shooting, and any ground will refuse someone who has been drinking.
