What it's like
Everyone gets a set of wireless headphones with two or three channels, each with a different DJ or genre, and a light on the headset showing what you are listening to. You switch whenever you like, which means half the room is dancing to something different.
The walking version is the other format: a guide leads the group through the city with the music in the headphones and a route of stops along the way.
Headphones are handed out against a deposit or identification and you have to hand them back, so keep track of them across the night.

In Edinburgh, silent disco is a one-hour walking tour, part flash mob, led by a guide on the same headphone channel. It starts from a bar by Hunter Square on the Royal Mile. Public tours run on Saturdays at 3pm, 4.30pm and 6pm and are shared with other groups, including families, so keep it clean. Groups of 20 or more can book a private tour. Arrive 15 minutes early, wear comfortable shoes for the hills and bring water.
