What it's like
These are guided tours with a performance element. A prison experience puts the group through the routine of an old jail: the cells, the uniforms, the drills and a guard who does not break character. A communist tour covers a city's Soviet history through the bunkers, the buildings and often a vehicle from the period.
Both run a couple of hours and both are more interesting than they sound. There is usually shouting and there is always at least one member of the group singled out.
Cold buildings and uneven floors, so a jacket and proper shoes. Anyone claustrophobic should say so before the cells, not inside them.

Actors run the set, the group wears orange jumpsuits, and you smuggle in your own sealed spirit for the bar team to turn into three or four rounds of cocktails. Allow one 70cl bottle between three or four people. Sessions last an hour and 45 minutes for six to 40 people, and everyone needs photo ID. It sits in the centre, so it leads straight into the night.

London's version is an immersive prison cocktail bar off Hackney Road in Shoreditch. You are issued orange jumpsuits, locked in a themed cell block with actors playing the guards, and served about four cocktails over one hour 45 minutes. Alcohol is not included: each person has to bring their own spirit in a sealed, unopened bottle, which the bar mixes for you. Groups of six to 30 suit it, and it is 18+ with ID. Agree who is bringing what before the day so nobody turns up empty-handed.
