What it's like
Everyone gets a character with a background, a set of secrets and a motive. Actors or a host run the scenes between courses, evidence is released in stages, and the group questions each other and then names a suspect at the end.
It is usually built around a meal, so it doubles as dinner and takes up the whole evening, typically three hours or so.
Most hosts send the character briefs out in advance and many suggest costume. Read yours before you turn up, because the group notices the person who has not.

Local tips
Most murder mysteries in Birmingham are run by actors who come to you, so the group provides the room: a private dining room, a function room or the house you are staying in. Two actors is standard, and the evening runs one and a half to four hours depending on the format and whether you eat. A 90-minute comedy version with the venue included is also available, as is a hosted traitor-style game in a private room. Food is not normally included, so book dinner first and build the mystery around it.
Local tips
In Brighton there are three ways to do it. A murder mystery escape room sits above a pub on London Road, with slots until 10pm from Friday to Sunday. A Traitors-style deception game runs for 90 minutes in a private room at a city-centre hotel or bar, for ten or more. Or actors come to your rented house for a two-to-four-hour evening; venue and food are not included, and a digital pack with roles and costume ideas is sent ahead. The last option works best on the night you are eating in.
